An Efficient Backoff Scheme for IEEE 802.11 DCF

چکیده
This paper proposes a new backoff algorithm for a CSMA/CA protocol and an analytical model computing the saturation throughput and delay of the scheme. The scheme differs from the standard backoff schemes in that the backoff time is not uniformly chosen in the contention window interval which results in reduced collision probability under high loads. Numerical analysis shows that saturation throughput and delay of the proposed scheme outperform the earlier approach.

IEEE 802.11 distributed coordination function (DCF): analysis and enhancement
Being a part of IEEE project 802, the 802.11 Medium Access Control(MAC) is used to support asynchronous and time bounded delivery of radio data packets. It is proposed that a Distributed Coordination Function(DCF), which uses Carrier Sense Multiple Access with Collision Avoidance (CSMA/CA) and binary slotted exponential backoff, be the basis of the IEEE 802.11 WLAN MAC protocols. This paper pro...
متن کاملOptimal Constant-Window Backoff Scheme for IEEE 802.11 DCF in Single-Hop Wireless Networks Under Finite Load Conditions
Existing backoff scheme’s optimization of IEEE 802.11 DCF MAC protocol consider only saturated networks or asymptotic conditions. In real situations, traffic is bursty or streamed at low rates so that stations do not operate usually in saturated regime. In this work, we propose and analyze a backoff enhancement for IEEE802.11 DCF that requires information only about the network size and that is...
متن کاملModified Backoff Algorithm considering Priority in IEEE 802.11
The IEEE 802.11 MAC uses DCF for media access among the participating network nodes. But DCF alone is neither capable nor suitable for fulfilling the QoS requirements of real-time applications. There are many ways in which QoS is provided by modifying DCF based MAC. This paper proposes the modified MAC protocol which is based on IEEE 802.11 and (m,k)-firm scheme tries to improve DCF functionali...

متن کاملPUMA – A New Channel Access Protocol for Wireless LANs
In this paper we propose an extension of the IEEE 802.11 DCF protocol [5] called PUMA (Priority Unavoidable Multiple Access). PUMA can easy be implemented in wireless network cards instead of IEEE 802.11 DCF. It has been shown through simulation that PUMA is fair, efficient, stable and allows for provision of time-bounded services. Moreover, its performance is unaffected by hidden stations. The...
